On Friday, December 18th, Mark Drucker and Allison Keagle will open The Ruby Cinema in Gunnison. This is the second venture for Drucker and Keagle, who began running the Majestic Theatre in Crested Butte in December of 2005.

The Ruby Cinema will operate in the Prosser Theater in the new College Center on the Western State College campus. The College Center is a 70,315 sq. ft. facility with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. In addition to the Ruby Cinema, the Center will house a dining hall, retail food operation, book store, and various student services. The Ruby Cinema will be the first business in the Center to open, with other services and businesses going online in January.

The Ruby Cinema has been made possible with the generosity and support of Western State College, and alumnus Don Prosser (WSC ’75). Prosser, a Denver-area CPA and president of the WSC Foundation Board of Directors, donated $1.5 million toward the building of the theater. In recognition of his generosity, the space in which the Ruby Cinema operates is named the Prosser Theater. When the Ruby Cinema is not showing films, the Prosser Theater will accommodate Western State College classes, conferences, and other functions.

The Prosser Theater will have one screen, with 199 seats. The Ruby will present movies with a state-of-the-art digital projector, and will be capable of showing films with the new generation 3D. At the Ruby, 3D patrons will not use the red and blue cellophane of years past. Today’s glasses are non-disposable and clear, and will not distort color or give viewers a headache.

Unlike the Majestic Theatre, the Ruby will not sell alcohol. The Ruby will sell many of the classic concessions and natural alternatives that are sold at the Majestic, with a few additions like nachos and Dippin Dots ice cream.

The Ruby Cinema will publish its contact information and its own website address on the Majestic Theatre website (www.cbmajestic.net) as soon as they are available. There will be advance tickets available for opening night and beyond sometime before the 18th. The opening film at the Ruby Cinema will be James Cameron’s Avatar in 3D.
